Who among you hasn’t pictured this mighty, rugged military off-road vehicle in a sandstorm, flanked by soldiers, or, a little more pop-culturally, as a star of countless movies? The HMMWV M109 7A2 (Revell Shop Link) is more than just a means of transport for the US Army. It is a symbol of modern military mobility and progress, and in passing, a true icon in model making.
The US Army’s Jack of All Trades: The Story of the HMMWV
Let’s briefly dig into its history before we get to model building. The term HMMWV (High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle) stands for an off-road, versatile military vehicle of the US Armed Forces. It was developed as the successor to the aging M151 MUTT. The contract awarded to AM General, proud producers of 55,000 vehicles in 15 variants, was the largest single order the US Army ever placed for wheeled vehicles—and for good reason: The goal was to create a vehicle that would prove its capabilities under the most extreme conditions, whether desert, mountains, or icy temperatures.
Series production began in 1985. The vehicles rolled off the assembly line at AM General in Indiana and were equipped, among other things, with portal axles, which led to an impressive ground clearance of 45 cm. Their hallmark was the ability to perform under the harshest operating conditions: crossing up to 1.5 m deep water (when properly equipped) or mastering soft desert sand—all of this makes the HMMWV an absolute all-rounder. Over its career, the vehicle took on more and more tasks: from material transport, troop transport to armed patrol and medical vehicles.
By the end of the 2000s, more than 150,000 were already in service with the US Army and the Marines Corps. The M109 7A2 series, which you’ll find in our model kit, reflects further developments in robustness, payload, and drivetrain. As a result of increased IED attacks in Iraq and Afghanistan, the vehicle was increasingly replaced by more heavily protected MRAPs (Mine-resistant ambush protected vehicle), but remains a mainstay in logistics and transport.

The M109 stands not only for power and mobility; technically, it was ahead of its time, such as with the aforementioned portal axles. These not only allow for increased ground clearance but also provide robust dynamic driving characteristics for off-road operation. Models like the M1113 and M1114 variants also feature retrofit armor and are thus part of the mobile defensive lines of the US Armed Forces.
But even cult vehicles have their downsides: The maintenance effort for a HMMWV is legendary; an engine replacement can easily take 37 hours, and fuel consumption of 30–60 liters per 100 km will make even seasoned logistics personnel sweat in this vehicle class. Operating costs are correspondingly high, which is why many HMWWVs today end up in storage or on the surplus market.
HMWWV in Action:
The HMMWV was essentially involved in all major military conflicts of the last four decades: It gained international fame during the Gulf War, stood on the front lines in Afghanistan and Iraq, and was used by US and allied troops. One of the most famous moments: The HMMWV led columns through enemy fire during Operation Desert Storm and served as a mobile command center in numerous peacekeeping missions.
Even civilian variants, the famous “Hummer H1,” became iconic—by the way, the very first civilian production Hummer rolled into Beverly Hills at the request of Arnold Schwarzenegger.
In films and series, the HMWWV always finds its way back into the spotlight. Whether blockbusters like “Black Hawk Down,” “Iron Man,” or “The Rock”—almost everyone knows scenes with these imposing vehicles thundering across the screen. In real life, the vehicle remains a sought-after exhibit at military parades, in museums, or at re-enactments.
A fun fact on the side: The original model prevailed at an international comparison test against the exotic but hopeless Lamborghini LM002. And it remains cult to this day: Anyone who wants to drive an original HMMWV as a civilian still has to deal with lots of paperwork and expensive imports—but will be rewarded with a very special kind of workshop camaraderie 🙂

- Special Equipment: M1097A2 models are optionally equipped with a 9,000 lb winch, run-flat tires, improved brakes, and electrical systems with dual voltage.
- Adaptability: The platform can be quickly converted as needed (troop carrier, communications vehicle, mobile workshop, etc.)
- Above-Average Off-Road Capability: An M1097A2 can tackle inclines up to 60% and lateral slopes up to 40%.
Dimensions and Versatility
The M109 7A2 is longer than the early HMMWV models (4.84 m instead of 4.57 m) and offers space for two people in the basic version. With troop kits, it can carry up to eight passengers. Noteworthy is the wide range of roles: as a carrier for electronic systems, tractor for field howitzers, freight and shelter transporter, or as a mobile platform for special and task forces.
