The POWER UP Tour: A Rock Spectacle for the 50th Band Anniversary

The POWER UP Tour began on May 17, 2024, at the Veltins-Arena in Gelsenkirchen and was AC/DC’s first tour since 2017. It was named after the 2020 album “Power Up,” which the band released after a lengthy creative break. The tour took the hard rock legends through a total of nine German cities as well as through Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, England, Slovakia, Belgium, France, and Ireland.
With over 54,000 enthusiastic fans at the opening concert in Gelsenkirchen alone, the band made a clear statement: AC/DC is still a formidable force in rock music even after 50 years. The enormous rush for tickets was remarkable – according to reports, 1.5 million tickets were sold for the entire tour within one day.

New Lineup, Classic Sound

Interesting for fans and model builders alike: The 2024 tour brought a changed band lineup. While Angus Young (lead guitar) and Brian Johnson (vocals) continued to form the front, bassist Cliff Williams was replaced by Chris Chaney (known from Jane’s Addiction and Alanis Morissette). Matt Laug sat behind the drums instead of longtime drummer Phil Rudd.
This new lineup reflected the changes the band has undergone in its 50-year history – a detail that further enhances the significance of the tour truck as a witness to this special tour.

The Tour Trucks: Technical Masterpieces Behind the Scenes

AC/DC’s tour trucks were not just means of transportation but rolling symbols of the band. Specially designed trucks were used for the POWER UP Tour, bearing the distinctive tour logo and the iconic lightning graphic that already adorned the album cover of “Power Up.”
These trucks were technical masterpieces, equipped with state-of-the-art LED lighting systems that illuminated the band logos during night drives between concert venues – an impressive spectacle on European highways. The fleet not only had to transport the tons of equipment for the massive stage setups but also had to maintain a tight tour schedule that took the band across Europe from May to August 2024.
Particularly impressive was the logistical challenge: After a concert, all the equipment had to be dismantled, loaded, and transported to the next venue in the shortest possible time. The tour trucks were therefore not only visually striking but also functionally perfectly designed for the needs of a mega tour.

The Concerts: Technical Innovations on Stage

The POWER UP Tour also set standards in terms of stage technology. The trucks transported a stage system specifically designed for stadiums that optimally showcased AC/DC’s characteristic sound. The light show with state-of-the-art LED systems and the pyro effects for which AC/DC is known were of course also transported with the tour trucks.
A real highlight was the gigantic bell that was used during the classic “Hells Bells,” as well as the oversized cannon for “For Those About to Rock.” These iconic stage elements were also transported in the tour trucks from venue to venue.
